Posted on: 17 January 2019

Keeping your eyes healthy and in the best possible shape is very important to your overall well-being. Many people don't put enough thought into the proper care of their eyes and this can cause a lot of different problems to show up in the future. Here are some of the many things that you should be doing to help your eyes stay healthy.

Eat an eye-healthy diet

It's important for you to eat foods that help with your eye sight and that keep you healthy in many ways, so you won't have to worry so much about the health of your eyes going downhill when problems could have been avoided with some extra attention paid to your diet. Leafy greens, fatty fish, beans, nuts and eggs are a few examples of foods that help to give your eyes the vitamins and minerals they need to maintain good health. Also, make sure you are drinking enough water each day to avoid dehydration, which can negatively affect many areas of your health, including your eyes.

Don't smoke or use nicotine products

You know nicotine and smoking can cause a lot of health problems for you. However, if this knowledge isn't enough to help you decide to go ahead and quit yet, then maybe you need to learn about one more reason for quitting. Smoking can have negative results with regards to the health of your eyes. Nicotine can increase your chances of developing cataracts and other problems such as macular degeneration.

Wear the right gear for the job

If you are going to be reading or spending time on the computer and you should wear glasses to do so, then be sure you wear them. If you are going to be outside in the sunlight, then make sure you go outside while you are wearing good sunglasses that offer you UV protection. If you are going to be spending time in a workshop where sawdust, concrete dust, or other small types of debris will be in the air then you want to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from getting scratched.

Don't put off an eye exam

If you have something going on with your eyes that isn't normal, then you want to make sure you call to get in with the optometrist right away. There may be nothing wrong with your eyes, but there also may be something happening that requires immediate treatment for you to prevent something bad from happening to your eyes. For example, flashing lights in your eye may be caused from something as simple as stress. However, flashing lights can also be indicative of a retina detachment. If your retina is detaching there are a certain number of hours in which you need to have surgery done in order to save your vision. Regular exams are also needed because it's also important to catch vision changes early so you can get the prescription eyeglasses you need.
